“McCurry, man, how does he do that? What do you even call it? Photojournalism? Documentary photography? I don’t know, they are partly true I guess, but they sound pretty dry when you’re looking at the pictures. Painter? Closer to the truth maybe, but then again he does use a camera. He’s out there in another realm, sending dispatches from the other side of the looking glass. Myth maker? Dream catcher is more like it – like his imagination is a force of nature – like the light emanates from his eyes, infuses his subjects and radiates back into his lens.
I’ve seen that light in his eyes, and come to think of it, I don’t look too hard at it – maybe because it’s so intense I’m afraid of being blinded, like staring at the sun. Can color blind you, too? A lot of people who could more easily be categorized as photographers, need something to be happening in order to make a picture. With Steve, the light is happening, and the colors are happening. Yeah, but then what about the figures? Did they step out of a time warp or a parallel universe inhabited by mithological gods or out of his own sublime dreams? Or does Steve walk into the dreams of the people in the pictures? He’s hard to pin down all right. At the risk of embarrassing him, maybe the only way to say it is, he’s an artist, and leave it at that.”
